Ecclesiastes 3:1
Please excuse the biblical reference. Especially because my knowledge of the bible is limited.
But I was thinking today about cycles, and how many we seem to be on the cusp of in the past 30 years, cultural and economic and even environmental, large and small - particularly here in the US.
Let's see...what occurs at the moment (though I'm sure we could add more):
Innocence vs. responsibility vs. decadence: the 60s to the 70s to the 80s and 90s - discovery and protest and activism reduced to free sex, a lot of blow and tattoos/ritual scarification without the ritual.
Isolationism vs. imperialism
Rationalism vs. Fundamentalism, or maybe knowledge vs. faith
The US business cycle has turned twice in the past 17 years; the world economic cycle at least once
Directness to satire/irony to directness again
The transition of the machine economy to the information age
Protest vs. apathy vs. participation
Global warming, and the earth's natural climate cycle
Liberal to conservative - both in the political-party sense and the sense of Americans' relative engagement with each other
Pro-independence vs. pro-institution
Monoculture vs. pluralism
These are all on different timelines, and yet they all converge now. Is this weird, to be living in the middle of so many transitions? Maybe that's a reason for the current sense of apocalypse. Or is it simply an issue of perspective or imposing one, and I have an insufficient historical sense?
Funny - when I was a teen I felt I had been born too early. Now I wonder if maybe I was born too late.
